Is CBD for Pets Safe?

CBD for Pets

CBD for pets has become very popular over the last decade. It has been proven to have many medicinal properties that are very beneficial to its users. As such, it was only a matter of time before people started wondering whether this compound could be used by their pets too.

Before we go any further, please note that information on animals and CBD for pets is scanty at best. Furthermore, the use of CBD on pets is illegal in many countries such as the UK.

The information provided in this article is purely educational and is not meant to be used as a medical reference.

What Is CBD Used for in Pets?

Most people who give CBD for pets usually do so as a remedy to some form of illness or another. Just as with humans, pet owners have reported that CBD has helped relieve pain, reduce anxiety, the occurrences of seizures and several other afflictions in their pets.

While there haven’t been any documented observations of these pet owners’ claims, they are generally in line with what has been observed in humans.

CBD can also be used as an anti-inflammatory, a stress reliever, and an anticancer compound for dogs. CBD promotes the general wellbeing of pets by maintaining the balance and the proper functioning of their biological systems.

In cases where pets are undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, CBD has been claimed to be a good antiemetic. By reducing the levels of nausea and vomiting in your pets, CBD reduces the level of discomfort your pet feels after chemo treatment sessions. While there are many antiemetic drugs in the market, they come with many side effects that are not found in CBD. These include diarrhea, excessive drooling, drowsiness, loss of appetite and so on.

Here are some more benefits of using CBD for pets:

  • It promotes cardiovascular health
  • It can be used to increase their appetite
  • CBD helps keep their nervous systems healthy and lowers the risks of them getting neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Cannabidiol can help improve your pets’ bowel movements.

There may be more undiscovered advantages of giving CBD to your pets. However, we at CannaCBD strongly suggest that you talk to your local vet and carry out a lot of research before giving CBD to your pet.

How Does CBD Affect Pets?

Despite numerous research efforts, there doesn’t seem to be conclusive studies on how exactly CBD works in pets.

The only thing that we know for sure is that, just like humans, dogs also have an endocannabinoid system. However, whether CBD interacts with their system the same way it does in humans is anyone’s guess.

Studies have also shown that CBD is metabolized by the liver in dogs- just as with humans. Dogs with pre-existing liver conditions should not be given CBD.

Other side effects associated with CBD in pets include:

  • Increased drowsiness: The calming effect of CBD when it is used to treat anxiety and reduce stress in animals sometimes causes them to become very drowsy. This is especially true when administering high doses of CBD to pets.
  • Increased dryness of pets’ mouths: Cannabidiol has been linked to the reduced production of saliva in pets. This causes pets to exhibit signs of being thirstier than usual.
  • Lower blood pressure: CBD can sometimes cause a drop in blood pressure in pets. This is usually accompanied by light-headedness which may cause your pet to lay down or be inactive for a short while.

How Is CBD Administered to Pets?

Just as with people, there are many ways that CBD can be given to pets. These include oils, edibles, creams, pills, capsules and so on.

There has been a study on which is the best method to administer CBD to your pets. During the study, researchers measured pharmacokinetics. Pharmacokinetics us the study of the movement of a substance (usually a drug) into, through and out of the body.

When studying pharmacokinetics, experts measure the absorption, distribution, metabolism and the excretion of a drug- in this case, CBD.

The study was carried out by a team of vets, led by Stephanie McGrath, and it involved administering a single dose of CBD to dogs and measuring their blood levels over a 12-hour period. The team used three delivery methods of CBD- oil, capsules, and creams.

The results of their study showed that the best form of CBD to give to your dog is oil. This is because, of the three forms, oil reached the highest concentration of CBD in the blood, remained in the bloodstream for the longest time and showed consistent results across different breeds.

Capsules came in at second while creams were the worst performers in the bunch.

Is CBD Safe for Animals?

This is probably the biggest question that most pet owners have. The best answer we could find is by the World Health Organization which in 2017 said that pure CBD appeared to be safe and well-tolerated by animals.

However, there have been recent studies that have shown that CBD increases the levels of certain alkaline enzymes in the liver. This is on par with the observations that CBD sometimes causes liver complications and should therefore not be given to animals with pre-existing liver conditions.

At the end of the day, the biggest determining factor of whether CBD is safe for your pets depends on the quality of the product that you are buying.

CBD products with high levels of THC is toxic to cats and dogs. Always remember to check the reputation of your CBD vendor and the purity levels of their products.

CBD products for animals are not always the same as CBD products for humans due to differences in the presence and levels of some ingredients. Discuss your options with your vet before administering CBD to your pets.
